Pain Tolerance and Tattooing: What to Expect, and How to Prepare

The pain of a tattoo can be a concern for both experienced and new clients. Preparing for the tattoo experience and knowing what to expect can reduce anxiety.

This guide will help you understand your pain tolerance for tattoos and give you some practical tips.

Understand Tattoo Pain: What You Can Expect

Tattoo pain can vary significantly depending on several factors, including body placement, personal pain tolerance, and tattoo style. In general, areas that have less muscle and more endorphins (like the ribs and spine) tend to be more painful. The outer arms, calves, and thighs are less painful.

The size and complexity of the tattoo can also affect the level of pain. The pain can be increased by large, complex designs that may require multiple colors and shading. Simpler tattoos that only use line work and are smaller in size, such as those with simple designs, may take less time to complete.

How to Increase Your Tattoo Pain Tolerance

  • Get Lots of Sleep: A well-rested person can handle pain better. To avoid feeling tired and irritable before your tattoo appointment, try to get at least a full night’s rest.
  • Eat A Good Meal: Eating a good meal before your tattoo will help stabilize your blood sugar levels and maintain your energy level. Low blood sugar levels can cause dizziness, and make you more sensitive to pain.
  • Stay Hydrated: Keeping your skin hydrated can help tattooing go more smoothly. Bring water to your appointment, especially if you’re in for a long one.
  • Choose Comfortable Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothes that allow easy access to the tattoo area. Tight clothing can cause discomfort and make it difficult to relax.
  • Deep Breathing: Deep breathing can help you manage pain and stay calm. Focusing on long, slow breaths can help you stay grounded and prevent tension.
  • Take Breaks If Needed: Do not hesitate to request a break if the pain is too much. The majority of tattoo artists will accommodate you and allow you to take a break to recover.
